Since it was rush hour, Janbound only got a standing spot on the subway, but that didn't matter to her: She had just caught the subway and would be at JulieG's shop in time for her next shift—that's all that mattered! He checked to see if Janbound had hurt herself in the sudden stop—and suddenly muttered, "Poor girl—too poor to buy shoes!" He had spoken very quietly, but Janbound had heard him nonetheless: She looked down at her bare feet – and at that moment, Janbound's red face and the red stop signal that had stopped the subway so abruptly both glowed brightly! How embarrassing! But her hope that the subway would start moving again was not fulfilled for the time being – the driver still called for a little patience.

A faint smell of sweat filled Janbound's nose – nothing unusual in a crowded subway car, but her senses were highly sensitive at the time. Fighting the urge to vomit, she staggered again – this time into a woman who, in her shock, stepped on her bare toes with her high heels. In the pain, Janbound didn't even hear her apology. The girls finished their household chores faster than expected. This left time for a short walk. This didn't lead them back to the store, however, but into the woods.
