The Old Hamm-Orc word for librarian was Bil-Sumhun (literally "Book-Slave") and that was why orcs in general (and orcish scientists in particular) supported the Order of Foredge back when it applied for (and received) a religious exemption to the emancipation laws. The mostly-female librarians who took oath to Foredge thus continued to be the individual chattel property of their patrons.
Teela Youngdigger had taken oath to Foredge at the beginning of her career as a librarian, despite the objections of her brother. "We're orphans, Arthil," she had argued. "Halfling orphans. That means we sometimes have to do things the hard way."
Being a halfling slave-wench did win her a position as assistant librarian in the technical library of Uram Spaceport, and the orc-techs there gave her nothing worse than good-natured chaff - grinning through their tusks when she returned that chaff in kind. "You wouldn't whip a slave-wench who wore glasses, would you?" became her catchphrase.
Then the alien starship arrived.
"By literal translation she is Hot Blackness of Dawn," Spaceport Chieftain Mothgar said after summoning Teela to his office. "A free translation might be Hot Early-Morning Coffee. In any case, she has the stardrive, whose secret we have yet to crack, and her captain-owner is here to do a bit of tramp trading with us primitives." Mothgar gave Teela a serious look. "He also has a special request. He wishes to examine you, and to purchase you if he finds you acceptable."
"Just me, master?" Teela asked.
"Just you. He is specifically interested in purchasing a halfling slave woman. Not an elf or dwarf, or even an orc or human female. And you are our one halfling book-slave."
Thus Teela found herself stripped and examined by the leonine alien captain, under the watchful eye of Chieftain Mothgar. Afterwards, they gave her her slave tunic back and secured her in a storage room, leaving her to sit on an old Zendoal platform while the two masters haggled outside.
Lonug Mass-spec-skull entered with a stack of books. "These are a sweetener to keep you company, Teela-wench. Don't worry, they're not from the library. We raided a used-book store for them."
"I'm sure you selected those titles very carefully," Teela answered. "Instead of, say, picking books based solely on the size of their covers."
Lonug grinned through his tusks and departed. A few moments later her new, alien owner entered.
"You are now a female in my harem," Master Whitemane told Teela. "You will be affectionate, obedient, and comfortable, and the more affectionate and obedient you are, the more comfortable you will be. And I will take you - and your books - to places you cannot now imagine."
