Carol didn't ask many questions when she opened the door to her daughter and her barefoot friend—after all, she was familiar with the girls' games. But when she saw Susan's desperate face, she wanted to hear the whole story—after stuffing a "comfort food" chocolate bar between Susan's teeth.
Claire told Susan, who was clearly on edge, the whole story of Susan's lost shoes—only mentioning her own role in it in passing, but going into great detail about how she was tickled by the naughty Bondage Boy.

Now or never! Claire jumped up, grabbed her sneakers, and ran for the door. But she didn't get far. Carol and Susan caught up with her, grabbed her, and threw her to the ground. Her mother twisted her arms behind her back while Susan straddled her thighs.
"Stop fighting! You're only making it worse!" Susan shouted, first pulling off her best friend's socks and then tying her bare feet together, while Carol took care of her daughter's wrists.
When Claire lay barefoot on the floor in a hogtie, she had lost. She was already barefoot. Her mother scolded her: "I thought Susan was your best friend! You help each other instead of making such a scene!"
Claire blushed. Her mother was right. She mumbled an apology, but it was too late. She had to stay on the floor and go to school barefoot the next day!
At least they had Ms. Meyer as their teacher for the first two periods the next day, since she knew about the friends' bondage game—plenty of time for Claire to come up with something.
