"Incoming!" Duke shouted. "Take cover!"
Well, it wasn't REALLY Duke. In reality, 9-year-old Grant had said it, followed by a a spittle-filled "explosion." But in the boy's imagination, Duke was leading a joint task force of G.I. Joes and Rebel Alliance fighters against an onslaught of Cobra Command and Imperial troops. His imagination allowed his bedroom to be transformed into a multiverse battlefield. And thanks to duplicate action figures, Grant was able to imagine himself in the fray with his heroes.
Once the "explosion" had subsided, the heroes resumed their push to the enemy command post. They succeeded, and regrouped for the next push. But the stormtroopers had a fresh unit attacking from the left! Oh no! Our heros had to fall back and regroup! The Joes and the Rebels made a mad dash for cover, sadly leaving behind Grant himself! Or more accurately, his duplicate Luke Skywalker action figure that he used as himself in play. (It was Luke Skywalker in stormtrooper disguise, which he had colored with crayons to customize the armor.) Grant hadn't yet reached the point where he was incorporating hero deaths into play, and CERTAINLY not his own character! So it was only natural that he would surrender and be captured. The Joes would be able to rescue him later.
But then, just as he was coiling an old shoelace around his action figure to march him off to Cobra Commander, Grant experienced a surge of excitement and curiosity. What if he was actually tied up like that and had to wait for rescue? Grant fixed on it. Then he realized what he had to work with. In his toy box, he had toy handcuffs. And down in the garage, his dad had a roll of duct tape. It made sense! In a flash, Grant ran down the stairs, silent in his socks. He went to the garage to retrieve the tape, then a pair of scissors from the kitchen. Then back to his room to continue playing. His parents never even saw him.
Back in his room, Grant closed the door and began cutting strips of tape off the roll. One he wrapped around his ankles, on his sweatpants. Another wrapped around his knees. A short one he smoothed over his mouth, imagining that Cobra Commander was telling the troops to "take him away! And shut him up!" And finally, he snapped the toy cuffs on his wrists behind his back. His back was against his bed frame so he was tied to it. Grant squirmed around, testing his bonds and "mmphing" softly into the tape. He was able to get lost in the game then. Waiting for rescue from his friends. Trying to escape. Grant couldn't decide what he wanted to do. Both were fun options. But eventually he decided to just escape on his own. He toggled the release switch on his cuffs and...
Where was the release switch?!
Oh no! They were broken! He couldn't get the cuffs off! And the keys were still in the box! Grant thrashed about, trying to free himself desperately. But he just couldn't. If only he had checked the cuffs first! If only he had brought the keys with him. If only he hadn't tied himself to his bed frame. Drat drat and more drat! Looked like it would be rescue after all. He nearly cried from embarrassment, but he swallowed his pride. He licked his tape gag loose, still squirming in case he could get loose. But he couldn't. And so,with a deep breath, Grant steeled himself for complete humiliation.
"DAAADD! CAN YOU COME HERE AND HELP PLEASE?"

This is such a fun story and an adorable little adventure. Good proof that stories don't need to be long to be entertaining.
Whoops! Looks like things didn’t quite go to plan for Grant! I’d love to see how dad reacts to finding his son like this.
