Study: Bondage May Make Men Happier

:D I found this interesting article in the archives, it was published on Foxnews Australia in 2007.
Study: Bondage May Make Men Happier

Monday, April 16, 2007

Bondage and discipline may actually make men happier, according to the first national survey of Australians' fetish habits.

The new sex study has revealed that 2 percent of Australian men and 1.4 percent of women admit to enjoying dominance, submission and sadomasochism-type sex in the past year.

But researchers involved in the phone survey of 20,000 people say they expect many more Australians to be engaging in the practice but unwilling to label it BDSM (bondage, discipline, domination and submission).

“There will definitely be more men and women who have sexual tastes in this direction but won't call it this,” said Dr. Juliet Richters, of the University of New South Wales.

“They might not like sex magazines but they just happen to like being tied up and spanked as part of foreplay.

“Ask them if they're into BDSM they'll say 'Yuck, no'.”

The survey results, to be presented at the World Association of Sexual Health congress in Sydney this week, give the first snapshot of Australians involved in bondage behaviour.

These fetishes were most common among gay, lesbian and bisexual people and heterosexuals who are “bi-interested”, said Dr. Richters, the lead researcher.

In women, BDSM was most popular among under 20-year-olds and those who had a partner they didn't live with. There were no age or relationship trends in men, she said.

People who engaged in the habit were more likely to be sexually adventurous in other ways, like trying anal sex and phone sex, looking at internet pornography or using sex toys.

“These are people for whom sex is a hobby,” Dr Richters said.

They were no more likely to have suffered sexual difficulties, sexual abuse or coercion or anxiety than other Australians.

In fact, says Dr. Richters, men into BDSM scored significantly better on a scale of psychological wellbeing than other men.

“This seems to imply that these men are actually happier as a result of their behaviour, though we're not sure why,” she said.

“It might just be that they're more in harmony with themselves because they're into something unusual and are comfortable with that.

“There's a lot to be said for accepting who you are.”

At the other end of the spectrum – least happy – were men who reported being attracted to men but had never acted on their desire and didn't regard themselves as gay.

Researchers said the study helps break down the reigning stereotype that people into bondage and discipline were damaged as children and were therefore “dysfunctional”.

“We really found that BDSM is simply a sexual interest or subculture attractive to a minority, not a pathological symptom of past abuse or difficulty with 'normal' sex,” Dr. Richters said.

“They've just got a broader and more unusual sexual repertoire than most.”

This is very interresting to see! But I indeed saw another study/article before on internet (it was a long time ago, so I am not sure about the if was just on my country or around the globe) that said that about 70% of the men already had or wanted to have a bondage experience someday!

I would just say that this study is highly accurate in my own experience.

I read something similar, I also read that almost half(like 47%) of males thay have bondage fantasies do have the fantasy of being the one dominated

Interesting study. Definitely makes sense why I feel better after a few hours after being restrained.
Either wishing to be tied up or currently tied up.

Thanks for sharing this article, it makes a lot of good points. I always feel relaxed and recharged after a bondage session. It's a great way of escaping the daily stress of life. So yeah, you can say bondage makes me happy.

Same with me, it always feels like a destresser for me. I feel like at least every few weeks I need some form of self bondage to be able to relax for a while. It's strange but it's almost a sense of freedom in a way.

There have been quite a few studies on the topic—conducted both from highly academic as well as not-so-academic perspectives. This specific article offers that what makes people happier may just be the fact that they are more “in harmony with themselves” and “accepting of who they are”.

I think that’s the key right there…no more, no less. You’re a lot less stressed out when you’re not worried about what other people think about you or what you do in your spare time. When you stop trying to “prove” to other people (who don’t even need “proving to” in the first place) that you’re cool or normal, that you belong…well, that just opens up a whole new world to explore. And in that world are opportunities, new friends, and new experiences to be had.

Bondage makes me happy. It makes me feel fulfilled. Without bondage being a part of my life…I wouldn’t be happy and I wouldn’t be fulfilled. I’d be a giant ball of stress and frustration. But that’s me. Some people are into bondage, some aren’t. There are about as many kinks as there are people. Some kinks (like bondage) are more common than others. Some kinks just not common at all.

Either way, “kinks” are, by definition, abnormal. By definition, that’s makes them “weird”. Does that make me weird? Yep. Does it make me or you a bad person? Of course not. Interesting and unique…most definitely.

So just embrace your kink and who you are…it’ll make you happier. :D

I feel that post 100%. It's no mere irony that this is the year I've been the most productive and also the year I've fully embraced my kinkiness, or at least 95%. I also feel like this is the year I've learned a lot more about myself, potentially why I'm so kinky, and how being into bondage, crossdressing, femdom, etc. has helped me relax.

As someone who is generally nervous and naturally on edge and can never keep my mind from jumping, bondage puts me in a place of focus and serenity. I used to even consider myself a switch but now I'm 100% rope bunny. I'd much rather be the one bound than doing the binding. Hell even if I were to bind someone I'd either self bind or have a scenario to be bound with them. It's to the point where things I normally would be uneasy doing(like driving long distances) I'd feel more open for if being bound extensively is the payoff.
