You're really giving us a cliffhanger (better than a clogged toilet...Sorry, couldn't resist ).
Just when rescue was at hand for Markus from captivity and for Peter from hopelessness and both from despair comes the nemesis of both men...Hunter!
Will Hunter take off with a captive Peter? After this, I'm sure that Mr. Patricks and Castor will sniff out (Sorry! ) Markus. And will it be Markus who rescues Peter?
@blackbound truly the most insidious aspect of Hunter's villainy- making us want the bondage to end! I shall endeavor not to make everyone wait too too long for the next update!
@CaptiveDan It is a very bittersweet sort of moment. The reunion is wonderful and exciting, but both getting captured is obviously not ideal! And of course, we now have an unhinged and desperate Hunter to deal with...
@Wedgieboy69 Quick! We need to change the posters! Too many hunks going missing in this city! We'll have to wait and see what happens now that Peter is one of Hunter's victims.
@Guardianbound Again, the relief and agony all mixed together in this chapter! To be honest, I'm not even sure Hunter knows what his plan is going to be right now. What will rescue look like, that is the million dollar question!
@KidnappedCowboy Someone needs to stuff those pun-typing fingers of yours into mitts! You're out of control! Hunter now has Peter, but its another thing to try and move him, especially given Peter's size, and nosy neighbors and police officers and dedicated friends seemingly everywhere. Hunter's got his work cut out for him, whatever he does next!
Thanks for the comments everyone! As I mentioned before, this was not the original end of this chapter, and what I was planning had to be cut and adjusted, so hopefully the next chapter will be finished sooner rather than later! Stay tuned as things heat up in the next few updates!
Well, @gag1195, you're setting us up for an explosive ending! (Sorry, I had to say it! )
@Volobond It's definitely frightening, for both of them. Markus, already captured, has to witness rescue being foiled before his very eyes. and Peter's elation at finding Markus turns to terror and anger as he is taken down by his roommate! I'm sure whatever Hunter has planned won't be too bad though!

And a nice big, tight leather muzzle to match the mitts...
Here's the next chapter, everyone! Hopefully I haven't kept you waiting too long! Enjoy!
Part 31: Disco Inferno
Peter
Consciousness greeted Peter like a punch in the face. His head throbbed from a growing migraine, and his breath was haggard. He heard his own labored breathing, as well as exasperated huffing nearby. And faintly, muffled moaning.
Markus! Hunter!
Peter shot up, his brain taking a moment to adjust to the sudden movement. He didn’t make it far before his wrists pulled backwards and he collapsed again. Peter felt the tightness around his wrists, the tension pulling against them. He fell back against the bed. Bed. Yes. That’s where he was. He was laying on Hunter’s bed. Bound to it.
Peter frantically looked at his hands, each pulled towards a different corner of the mattress. Rope stretched from somewhere unseen and connected to leather cuffs tightened around Peter’s wrists.
“HMMMMRRRR!†Peter bellowed. He felt the familiar sensation of fabric in his mouth and the stretched pressure of tape wrapped around his lips.
Peter felt hands on his leg and kicked instinctually. He felt his foot connect with something and Hunter called out, “FUCK!†Peter smirked with satisfaction at that.
But it revealed a few things to Peter. His legs were still free, meaning Hunter was still in the process of tying him down. He couldn’t have been out for more than a few minutes. He kicked again.
Hunter grunted in pain, but he remained undeterred in his efforts to restrain Peter. He managed to grab hold of Peter's right leg and pulled it over towards the corresponding corner of the bed. Peter fought and struggled as he watched Hunter bring his ankle closer to a waiting leather cuff. Rope was already attached to both the bed and the cuff. Peter reasoned that Hunter must have hastily prepared the cuffs while Peter was unconscious. He’d dragged Peter out of the closet, up onto the bed, probably gagged him in case he woke up and started screaming, then began with the rope and cuffs.
Hunter managed to get the leather cuff around Peter’s ankle and stepped back, huffing and puffing from the effort, gathering strength to wrestle against Peter’s remaining free limb.
Peter got a few more kicks in, but ultimately, it was a losing battle. He was trapped, no matter how much he fought against it. Hunter finally managed to trap his leg, then he collapsed against the bed and glared at his roommate.
Peter shot off a string of muffled expletives at his captor. He tugged and pulled against his restraints. And he noticed just how much give there was. The ropes weren’t necessarily loose, but there was a lot more slack than Peter expected.
And then it struck him. The leather cuffs. His own basic gag. Markus stuck in the sleepsack, with a harness that pulls double duty as a blindfold and gag. The ropes with too much slack. Hunter’s not very confident with his bondage skills. Peter compared his current predicament to his past experiences with Markus. With the teacher’s experience, he had no trouble keeping Peter restrained with just his ropes and knots. Even Peter had managed to keep Hunter tied to his chair all night with just ropes. When Connor had “kidnapped†Peter, he’d gone a similar route as Hunter; cuffs, both metal and leather, adding ropes to further restrain the blonde model. But Connor’s ropes were tight. Comfortable, but tight. Hunter’s ropes, in comparison, were lacking.
Given enough time, Peter was sure he could pull his way free. I’m not sure time is something we’ve got…
Hunter was still staring at him. Peter watched the emotions shift on his roommate’s face. Anger and frustration, sorrow, lust, remorse.
“Why, Peter?†Hunter finally spoke. “Why did you do that? You ruined everything!†He sounded genuinely upset. He stood and walked closer to Peter’s face. He squatted down and stared Peter directly in the eye. “This wasn’t how things were supposed to go!â€
“HMMMK HMMMMU!†Peter headbutted towards Hunter, who had enough sense to lean back.
“You weren’t supposed to find Markus. He wasn’t supposed to be found!†Hunter shot back, his anger rising. “He stays missing, you give up and eventually move on, you fall in love with me!â€
Peter scrunched his face in confusion. “NNMMMMOO!†Hunter had truly lost his mind. Even without Markus in the picture, there was a snowball’s chance in Hell of Peter ever choosing to be with Hunter.
“Shh…†Hunter cooed, his anger seemingly melting, a softness in his voice. He reached out to caress Peter’s taped cheek. “It’s okay. I know it’s an adjustment. I don’t expect you to love me back immediately. But that’s alright. We’ve got the rest of our lives to figure it out!â€
“HMMMM?†Peter’s eyes went wide. Hunter didn’t break eye contact with his prisoner, continuing to pet Peter’s face.
“You’re mine now, Peter.†He held Peter’s head with both of his hands, and leaned in a kissed duct tape lips. “And I’m yours. Forever.â€
Peter shook his head free from Hunter’s grip and glared back at Hunter. More muffled obscenities followed. Has he always been this insane?
Hunter laughed, though Peter wasn’t sure which emotion it was attached to. He ran his hands over Peter’s arms, down his chest and across his stomach, and Peter flinched. No amount of shirt fabric could block the awful sensation of Hunter’s fingers moving across his body.
“I know you don’t feel it now, but you will. One day, you’ll be the one tying me down and taking care of me. Until then, I’ll do the same for you. Until you grow to love me.†Hunter sounded so sincere, it gave Peter chills.
Peter strained again, against the ropes and against Hunter’s touch. “It’s okay…†Hunter cooed. “It’s a big adjustment.†He stood and Peter watched him walk over to his dresser, where Peter saw him crushing up pills and pouring the powder into a bottle of water.
When Hunter went to the closet door and opened it, Peter lost it. There, framed in the doorway, was his faintly struggling boyfriend. “MMMMMKKSSSS!†Peter tried to call out. He saw Markus’ head perk up at Peter’s muffled voice.
“PMMMR?†Markus struggled with renewed energy. Peter knew that his boyfriend must be terrified. Peter was too, for himself and for Markus. But Markus had been dealing with this for almost a week.
Helpless, Peter watched Hunter straddle above Markus, remove the gag, and force the water in. Quickly gagged again, Markus had no chance to call out or say anything. And then Hunter closed the door, banishing Markus back into the darkness. He walked over to the bed and crawled his way up onto it.
Straddling Peter now, Hunter leaned down and began unwinding the tape from around his roommate’s mouth. Peter could feel Hunter’s ass playfully grinding against his crotch. And in spite of everything, Peter felt it growing. Hunter smirked.
He fished the sock out of Peter’s mouth and immediately replaced it with the bottle of water. Peter shook his head, choking and sputtering as the water entered his throat. Hunter was relentless, forcing the water in. When he finally removed the bottle, Peter coughed and hacked, gasping for air.
Hunter allowed a brief moment for Peter to catch his breath before cramming the sock back in. Like with Markus, Hunter didn’t allow his captive the chance to articulate anything coherent. More duct tape.
Hunter smoothed the tape down and caressed Peter’s cheek again. “Just rest now. I’ve got to make some new plans, but you don’t need to worry about any of that.†He kissed Peter’s gagged lips as Peter’s eyes grew heavy.
—--
Markus
When Markus next awoke, new sensations greeted him. He was fairly certain he was still in Hunter’s closet, but the smell was different. He could still smell himself, terrible as it was, but there was also an almost overbearing warm, floral smell wafted through the space. Markus strained to focus. Candles? Markus also heard typing on Hunter’s computer. And muttering.
“Need to rent a car… need a head start… don’t want to be traced…†Hunter was talking to himself. He didn’t seem to realize that Markus was awake. “Leave tonight or tomorrow. The sooner the better…†Markus heard Hunter move in his chair. “We’ll have to leave you behind, but oh well. Maybe they’ll find you before you starve.†He chuckled and turned back to his computer.
Markus froze. Tonight? Hunter was going to run away with Peter tonight? Leave him left behind, locked in this closet. Would anyone find me? If Peter is missing too, would they find either of us in time?
Hunter stood, sniffed, and sighed. “Ugh, need to light a few more candles. Markus really knows how to ruin the mood…†Markus tensed, but Hunter stood over him. “Awake?†Markus involuntarily shifted, the unease of his unseen captor above him. “All the effort you’ve made me go through. I hope Peter appreciates it.â€
Then Markus felt the impact, the pain blooming at his side, the air rushing out of his nose. A solid kick to his torso. “You ruined everything!†Hunter hissed. Two more swift kicks. Each followed by more vitriolic hatred spilling from Hunter’s mouth. “Tried to take Peter from me!â€
Markus collapsed onto his side, struggling for breath as the wind was knocked out of him, tears forming. Markus heard Hunter leave, but not close the closet door. He allowed himself a small whimper. Hunter was going to steal Peter and leave Markus to die.
—--
Peter
Gentle hands massaged his sore body. It felt nice after that nap. He stretched and reality immediately greeted him. His limbs, pulled in four directions, the same feeling of duct tape over his mouth. And an instant later, Peter remembered everything, and knew that the hands on his body were Hunter’s.
“Nnmmmmoo!†He weakly protested against Hunter’s hands and his bonds.
“Sshh… It’s okay, Peter…†Hunter continued to coo. “Did you enjoy your nap?â€
“Fmmmk hmmmu!†Peter growled. He hated Hunter with every fiber of his being. He didn’t want to give his captor any satisfaction. He was dizzy and drowsy, but he was still a fighter.
Hunter smiled and left Peter to struggle. Peter tracked his roommate around the room and noticed that the closet door was open. Markus was awake now too, and feebly struggling on his side, in a cocooned fetal position. Peter also noticed the abundance of candles burning around the room, no doubt Hunter’s attempts at masking Markus’ smell. It resulted in a smokey flowery haze throughout the room.
Hunter was… packing? Peter watched as he neatly folded some clothes into a duffle bag, along with an extra pair of shoes, some socks and underwear. He packed up a laptop and various chargers, a few books, and a hat into a backpack.
Hunter looked up and winked. “Just getting a few things ready for our trip. We’ll get you ready soon enough.â€
Peter violently shook his head. “NNNMMMOOO!†He screamed into his gag. He pulled, straining at the bonds. He had to get them loose. He had to get out, now. He couldn’t allow Hunter to take him anywhere, he couldn’t let Hunter separate him and Markus again.
“We’re going on a little road trip, Peter. Away from all this unpleasantness. Just you and me!†He patted his backpack. “I can work from anywhere, so I’ll be able to provide for us while you adjust to things.â€
Peter thrashed. “HMMMU MMMNNNHHRRRR FMMMMKRRRR! RNNNN HMMM HLLLL!†Peter felt more give in the ropes. He didn’t think Hunter noticed. He just needed a bit more time and he’d be free. He couldn’t wait to punch Hunter in his smug face, to watch all of his delusional plans fall apart, to take Markus into his arms and escape.
He just needed a bit more time. He was so close.
Unfortunately, so was Hunter. He placed his duffle and backpack next to the door and happily jumped onto the bed on top of his struggling captive. He laughed and giggled like it was all some fun game, dodging Peter’s flailing and straddling him once again.
Peter bucked. Harder and with more strength than he thought he had, given his groggy and drugged state. But even weakened, Peter was a wall of solid muscle. And Hunter was… not. He tried to hang on, but awkwardly balanced on Peter’s hips, Hunter was thrown off of his prize.
And he collided into his nightstand. The impact knocked everything off, including the lit candle. Like it was happening in slow motion, Peter and Hunter saw the candle tip into the dark curtains that hung down next to the nightstand.
And catch.
And begin to spread.
Fire raced up the curtains, engulfing the fabric and spreading up and out along the wall, and the bed.
Peter struggled with renewed fervor, screaming at Hunter.
Hunter was frozen, stunned. All of his planning literally going up in flames. He looked at Peter, frantically shouting at him through the gag.
And then he ran. Grabbing his packed bags and rushing out the door, leaving his two prisoners behind, as the fire began to consume his room.

For someone that was Willing to commit felonies to be with the love of his life, Hunter seemed to have no problem leaving him to die when things got tough.
Hunter is not only a terrible person - but he's also a really stupid one. The second something slightly unexpected happened, all of his plans fell apart. I hope Markus and Peter are found before it's too late...
Bondage enthusiast in his 20s, a fan of cute guys, underwear, and bondage, preferably together.
Yeah, Hunter is completely irredeemable. Here's hoping adrenaline will give Peter the strength to get out and rescue the pair - or maybe divine secular intervention in the shape of the neighbor?
Hunter you slimeball how could you just leave and not give them a chance to escape. I can’t believe at one point I wanted to help you find someone to be your Peter
It took me long to catch up with the story. Just read the last seven chapters and was shocked to see Hunter take a turn for the worst. He's evolved into the most despicable and hated characters of the series and it makes me feel even worse that I used to feel bad for him. @gag1195 you've done an excellent job describing Hunter's devious schemes and that short glimpse into his personality reveals how truly evil he can be. His mannerisms and the way he treats Markus send chills down my spine. You've truly made a very believable villain for this installment. Even the plethora of bondage described in these chapters is overshadowed by Hunter's twisted and terrifying schemes, which again is evident of great he is as a villain. Terrifying and utterly insane. That last cliffhanger took me by surprise! Hunter needs to pay for the way he's treated Markus and Peter!! We can't let him get away so easily.
I erroneously uploaded the wrong version of this chapter! I had both versions open as I was working on it, and copied over the less complete draft by mistake! I've gone in and added the missing parts, and bolded them for the time being! This update is now in line what What I have already started working on for the next few chapters. Apologies to readers and commenters that have already read the chapter!
@Wedgieboy69@DeeperThanRed@blackbound@Socksbound@Donbrown tagging you all specifically since you've commented on the chapter.
What a cliffhanger to leave us on. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Now we all know Peter and Markus survive this ordeal but oh boy how it happens is going to be really interesting

(Struggling really hard not to make a "flames on the side of my face" reference here)
But my lord, Hunter truly is pathetic. Even when completely cuckoo, he can't even commit to something. What an utterly sad little individual. I bear no sympathy.
I'm deep in suspense, hoping the two can pull off a daring escape!
@Wedgieboy69 Sadly, at his core, Hunter is a coward before he's anything else. So it fits that'd he would cut and run when the going gets tough.
@DeeperThanRed In Hunter's slight defense, his plan was working, and had been working for several days by this point. He might have gotten overconfident and then couldn't easily adapt. He's still an awful person though!
@blackbound I'm excited to work on this next chapter and the rescue/escape efforts! We'll just have to wait and see how it happens!
@Socksbound Knowing what I had planned for Hunter from the beginning of this story, it was so hard not to respond to all of those early Hunter support comments how I wanted! I do feel a bit bad pulling the rug out from all of you early Hunter supporters, though.
@Donbrown Happy to see you caught up and enjoying the twists and turns! I'm very happy with how my villain Hunter has turned out! I'm not used to writing such despicable characters, so I'm glad its working!
@KidnappedCowboy I'm sure all you readers could come up with some more than appropriate punishments for Hunter when/if he is caught! But he definitely deserves some time in padded solitary!
@Guardianbound So many cliffhangers! Like I said earlier, some of this story I'm only able to write because it is a prequel, and I ultimately know that things turn out alright for Markus and Peter!
@Volobond I applaud your restraint! Again, to be fair, Hunter did commit... to saving himself... Rest assured, escapes both daring and tense will be had soon!
Thanks for taking the time to comment and show support, everyone! I'm a bit busy this weekend, so I will try to get the next chapter out before I get too busy and delay the cliffhanger too long! No promises though! Thanks for your patience!
I hope I didn't keep you all waiting too long! Here it is, the climax of this little adventure! I've still got a couple of chapters planned for this story, but we are winding down after the intensity of this chapter and the last few before it! Enjoy, and don't forget to leave a comment!
Part 32: Stayin Alive
Peter
Peter felt the heat of the flames as the fire began to spread up the curtains and licked the corner of the bed. The bed he was currently tied to. And Hunter, bastard that he was, had just bolted out the door. And as much as Peter wanted to rant and rail about his cowardly captor, he had more pressing matters. He and Markus were still trapped. And the room was going up in flames.
Peter had to get free. He had to get him and Markus out. I’m not dying here today! And neither is Markus. I just need to…
Peter sat up as much as the ropes would allow and pulled. He strained against his restraints. The give was there, but it wasn’t enough. He flexed and tensed and pulled with as much strength as he could muster.
He was stuck.
Peter shook his head and shouted into his gag. He was not going to give up. He couldn’t. He had no other choice but to escape.
But he didn’t have the strength to break Hunter’s knots. His fatigue from the last few days and the drugs forced into his system were working against him. But he couldn’t give up. If he couldn’t brute force his way out of his, he’d need to think quickly and figure out a way to get free.
The fire was spreading. Peter knew he had moments to escape before the bed was consumed. And then it hit him. The fire…
Peter fell back against the bed, letting the rope slacken. He flailed his arm blindly, hoping that the rope would catch in the flames. If he could get the rope to burn, it would either snap completely, or become weak enough for him to break free. He hoped.
Peter tried to see his progress, but the angle made that impossible. He could only judge by the intensity of the heat. If I manage not to burn myself…
He slowed his movement, trying to give the rope more time to connect with the fire. He pulled, testing the strength of his bond. Pull, flail, pull. Aware that the fire was beginning to move up the mattress and across the headboard. A moment more, and Peter knew that he’d really be feeling the flames.
He pulled one final time. And his hand pulled free! Peter raised his hand to his face, seeing the burnt end of rope still dangling from the leather cuff. He’d deal with that later. He still needed to free himself. And time was running out.
Peter frantically picked at the cuff on his right wrist, figuring it was easier to unbuckle the cuff than try and unknot the rope, given his ever shrinking time limit. The cuff gave in easily, quickly snapping back to an uncurled state. Brand new, never been used…
Peter sat up fully, scooting down away from the intensity of the fire and reached down to free his feet. His body was sore from being stretched out across the bed, and he audibly sighed when his right leg was freed. He wanted to lay back and rest, but there was no time.
He had to get to Markus. While one hand freed his final leg, his other reached up and yanked against the duct tape. He screamed as the tape was pulled down around his neck. Again, there would be time to remove it fully later. He spit the sock out and leaped up.
And almost collapsed. His balance unsteady, his mind still somewhat dizzy from the drugs. His breathing grew labored from the smoke filling the room. He coughed and hacked against the dark haze. He blinked and staggered towards the closet.
It was hard to see, but he could just make out the dark lump that was Markus, inching his way out into the room.
“Markus!†Peter shouted, his voice hoarse and desperate. “I’m here!â€
The leather worm froze and blindly looked up. “PMMMMMR!â€
—--
Markus
It was hard to concentrate on anything. The pain in his side, the hopelessness of the situation, the exhaustion from trying to survive this past week, Markus was close to giving up. He laid on his side, where he’d fallen earlier, unable to right himself. The pain was sharp and intense, and he was certain he had a couple bruised or even broken ribs. Not that it would matter, if Hunter’s plans succeeded.
He heard Peter’s muffled anger, and then a crash, like someone hitting a piece of furniture. More of Peter’s screaming. A door opening?
And then Markus smelled the smoke. The candles! Had one fallen over? Did Hunter go get water or a fire extinguisher? Where was Peter?
He listened, waiting. He didn’t hear Hunter return, didn’t hear the spray of water or an extinguisher. He did hear Peter’s rage, silenced though it was. Hunter left us behind?
Hunter had abandoned them to the fire! He had to escape somehow. He had no idea where Peter was in the room, or how he’d been tied up. But Markus couldn’t lay there and do nothing.
He slumped forward and pain bloomed in his side. Markus groaned. But what can I do? He was wrapped in leather and stuck in the sleepsack. He was injured, tired, and blind. Even if he managed to crawl his way out of the closet, what could he do? He had no way to help Peter. And what if he unknowingly moved to the fire?
But still, he had to act.
Ignoring the pain, Markus inched towards the door, or at least, where the thought the door was. He listened for Peter’s muffled noises and slowly made his way in that direction. He heard the fire crackling and roaring as it began to consume Hunter’s bedroom. Please be okay, Peter. Please!
Smoke filled his nostrils, filled his lungs. He was growing weary. He’d barely moved, barely been conscious in days, and now had to exert whatever energy he had left to escape a fire and smoke filled room.
Everytime he moved, his side exploded in pain. His breaths were short and shallow. He had no idea how far he’d moved. Peter and the fire were both getting louder, so Markus took that as a good sign. Moving towards the fire is a good thing… He didn’t have the energy or the time to appreciate the absurdity of what was happening.
He had to keep moving. He had to escape. He was to get to Peter.
“Markus!†He heard Peter’s anguished, but relieved voice. He froze. He was no longer muffled. Had he escaped? Markus wanted to cry. “PMMMMMR!†He called back, trying to stretch towards his savior.
He felt Peter’s strong hands on him, and he melted into his boyfriend’s grasp.
—--
Peter
Woozy, partially blinded by the smoke, and staggering, Peter stumbled towards Markus. He practically fell on top of the bound form of his boyfriend. Kneeling, he tightly gripped Markus’ shoulders and face, hardly believing that he was finally back in his arms.
“I’m here, Markus!†Peter shouted over the fire, rapidly spreading through Hunter’s bedroom. “I’m never letting you go. Ever again!â€
He pulled Markus up off the floor, and wrapped his arms around his bound boyfriend. Markus tensed and gasped, but allowed himself to be embraced. Except for the sleepsack separating them, Peter didn’t want this moment to end.
The rush of the flames brought him back to reality.
Most of Hunter’s bed, where Peter was just minutes ago, was engulfed in fire. The curtains on the other side of the bed had also gone up, and the fire was now spreading along the walls and licking at the floor.
They needed to leave immediately.
Peter straightened, took a few deep breaths, or as deep as he could manage in the intensifying smoke, and knelt, preparing to lift Markus into his arms. There was no time to try and free Markus from the leather sack, and even if there was, after nearly a week in captivity, Peter reasoned that the teacher had little strength to stand or walk on his own. Carrying his boyfriend out was the only option.
He held Markus tight, dug his arms under Markus’ arm and thighs, pulled him in, and began to lift. He strained, struggling to lift Markus and shift to a standing position. His knees buckled, his arms shook. He wasn’t strong enough. Just as he wasn’t strong enough to break through Hunter’s knots, he wasn’t strong enough to carry Markus to safety. Damn drugs. Damn smoke. Damn Hunter. A week ago, Peter would have been able to lift Markus with ease, despite the bearded man’s size and growing bulk. But now, when it mattered, truly mattered, he was coming up short.
Peter fell to his knees, still holding tight to Markus. He wouldn’t let him go, even if he couldn’t carry him to safety. “I’m sorry, Markus.†Peter said, nuzzling his boyfriend’s leather face.
“Pmmmmmrrrr!†Markus cried out, scared and confused.
“I can’t carry you, Markus.†Peter looked around at the rising flames, moving closer to the pair. He steeled his resolve. “But we’re still getting out of here.â€
Peter stood, and positioned himself behind Markus, hands on the teacher’s shoulders. He desperately gripped the leather, desperate for enough material to hold on to, to grip. Awkwardly, but slowly and surely, Peter began dragging Markus toward The hallway.
The fire wasn’t far behind. It was spreading fast. Most of Hunter’s room had been lost to the inferno. It was at the door, flames and sparks venturing out into the hallway. Peter pulled with as much strength as he could manage, struggling to keep his balance as he stumbled backwards and continued to drag Markus as fast as he could. He couldn’t risk slowing down for even a moment. The fire was at Markus’ feet.
Peter rounded the corner to the kitchen, trying to reassure Markus. “We’re in the kitchen now, Markus! We’re almost to the door! Just hang on a bit longer! I’ve got you!â€
“Fire Department! Hello? Is anyone there? Fire Department, please respond!†Peter froze, hearing the strong, intense voice coming from the hallway. Had the firefighter heard him talking to Markus? It didn’t matter. Help was here now. They were going to make it.
“In here!†Peter shouted as loud as he could. “Apartment 14C! Help! WE NEED HELP!â€
He continued towards the door. Help or no help, he needed to keep moving, or risk the fire behind them.
The front door slammed open a moment later and Peter was face to face with a firefighter. He was about Peter’s height, maybe an inch or two taller, and even under all the gear and padding, Peter could tell that the man was quite fit and muscular.
(In later retellings of this story, Peter insisted that the handsome firefighter burst through the door shirtless, axe in hand and covered in soot. Markus argued how crazy that sounded. Peter would interject to remind Markus that he was blindfolded and couldn’t disprove Peter’s account.)
“Please, help!†Peter pulled Markus’ form closer to the door.
The firefighter ran to Peter. “It’s alright, Sir. We’re going to help get you out of he-â€
“NO!†Peter shook his head. “Not me!†He pointed to Markus, leaning against his leg. “You have to get him first!â€
The firefighter nodded and seemed to hear Peter’s desperation. Without issue, he knelt down and carefully lifted Markus’ sleepsack into his arms. “Right behind me!†He barked his order to Peter, who nodded in return and quickly followed the rescuer out into the hallway.
As soon as they were clear, Peter saw more firefighters rush into the apartment to start battling the flames. He didn’t care. Making sure Markus was safe was all that mattered.
—--
Outside, the scene was one of controlled chaos. Firetrucks were now spraying Hunter’s window and the surrounding exterior of the building. More firefighters were rushing in and out, many escorting Peter’s neighbors. Ambulances and medical stations had been set up just down the street, and police were keeping a perimeter around the entire block. Crowds were gathered and at least 3 news crews were set up.
Peter followed his rescuer to the medical area. Markus was deposited onto a gurney, and the paramedic looked to the firefighter and to Peter. The firefighter started to say something, but Peter interrupted.
“His name is Markus Kent. He’s been stuck like that for almost a week, drugged but I don’t know with what, but otherwise no other medication. Please, help him.†Tears welled up in his eyes, and he felt faint, dizzy. “Please.â€
The firefighter grabbed onto Peter and held him upright. “Easy there. We’re going to do everything we can. Markus is in good hands. But we also need to get you checked out.â€
Peter fought against the man’s grip. “No, no. I’m fine. Please, just help Markus.â€
But he didn’t fight when the firefighter started matching him over to a free gurney and sat him down.
Peter watched as the paramedic began undoing the leather muzzle covering Markus’ face. Once undone, Peter lost his breath. There was Markus’ beautiful face. He’d missed that face so much and for too long, worried that he’d never see it again. But there it was. He smiled. Maybe even laughed. He was beyond relieved.
The paramedic also gasped and quickly waved someone over. Peter was too far away to hear them, especially over the commotion of everything else happening, but the other paramedic ran off, returning moments later with a police officer. Their walkie talkie was out in an instant, and within minutes, Markus was surrounded by police officers and paramedics, swallowed up by a sea of authorities.
The firefighter was busy trying to examine Peter, who finally turned his attention away from Markus. The rescuer had removed his helmet and lowered his face covering. Peter smiled. Their rescuer was a very handsome man. “Breathe in as deep as you can, please.â€
Peter complied, coughing as the fresh evening air filled his lungs. Peter repeated the deep breathing twice more, with more coughing. The firefighter nodded. He quickly checked Peter’s vision, his pulse, and inquired about injuries and bruising.
“I’m Dax, by the way.†he said in a surprisingly calm cadence.
“Peter.†He shook Dax’s extended hand. “Thank you for saving me. And for saving Markus.†It was the most genuine Peter had ever been about anything and it still felt inadequate. This man had just saved Markus. He deserved a medal, the key to the city, a parade.
“I’m just glad we got there when we did.†Dax replied, trying to humbly sidestep the platitudes. “You also deserve some thanks for getting Markus as far as you did.â€
He watched Peter focus more attention towards Markus’ gurney. “You must really care for him. It shows.â€
“I do.†Peter nodded.

The rest of the evening was overwhelming. Shortly after Dax, the firefighter, finished his check, Peter too was bombarded by police officers and detectives and paramedics. He answered questions about His predicament, Hunter, Markus, everything that transpired over the last several hours. He saw Markus get loaded into an ambulance and panicked, until assurances were made that Peter could join him soon. Dax and the paramedics agreed that Peter needed to be seen, not only for smoke inhalation, but also to treat whatever drugs were in his system.
“PETER!†A flash of red broke through the crowd around him and Peter was enveloped into a massive hug. Connor looked relieved when they separated, but Peter quickly pulled him back in.
“Markus! He’s okay! I found him! He’s…†He pointed towards the direction that the ambulance drove towards. Words failed him. He was overwhelmed. He couldn’t think straight. Couldn’t form thoughts. But he needed to let Connor and the others know.
Connor nodded and turned to one of the officers standing there. He quickly explained who Peter was, their efforts to find Markus, and inquired about Markus’ status. They weren’t allowed to discuss much, but they did explain where Markus was going for treatment. It wasn’t long before Peter was loaded into his own ambulance, bound for the same hospital. Connor promised that he and the others would be right behind him.
As the ambulance drove away, Peter finally exhaled. They were fine. Or at least they were going to be. Markus was safe. That was all that mattered.
I believe in Peter. Firefighters must work shirtless all the time, how else could they handle the heat?
Jokes aside, having both lovebirds be safe is a relief. Due to this story's status as a prequel, they were never in any danger (narratively speaking) but that didn't prevent me from being on edge for the last few chapters. I hope Peter and Markus can finally clear out some misunderstandings while authorities handle Hunter.

Whoa huge sigh of relief after this chapter. So glad Peter and Markus made it out. Peter is so adorable with his shirtless firefighter story I guess the only thing that remains is catching Hunter so he can receive some much needed justice

Those last 4 chapters were exciting and fantastic! Was not expecting Peter to get captured, the fire, Peter's last minute escape, Peter straining through the smoke to slowly drag Markus to safety, and then... hello Dax!
@blackbound I'm definitely breathing easier now that Markus and Peter are out of danger... And I'm the one who put them there and knew how it would end!
@DeeperThanRed It's definitely been a nerve wracking handful of chapters, even with the knowledge that things turn out alright! They'll definitely get the chance to talk in the next update! Lots of conversations with lots of characters! And of course, those firefighters must do some heat exposure/acclimation... right?
@Guardianbound You all are going to give Peter (and Dax) inflated egos, going along with his story like that! I'm glad to finally start relieving the tension of this story!
@Wedgieboy69 Unfortunately, I am known for my sappy endings... But that doesn't mean we won't see some just desserts for Hunter!
@Socksbound now, now, friend... An eye for an eye and all that! Is it not enough that everyone is safe and sound?
@_zin_ glad you enjoyed these last chapters, friend! Certainly an exciting few to catch up with! And yes! Happy to see Dax getting some love in the comments! He was the second most popular vote for Liam's future boyfriend back when "Liam Learns the Ropes" was being written, so I knew I'd have to include him at some point in a future story! His need for inclusion actually inspired me to have this fire escape scene in the first place!
@KidnappedCowboy It's certainly a more heroic and enticing image of a Hero than all that bulky protective gear hiding everything! We'll figure out the fate of Hunter in these last couple of updates, so don't worry! I'm not one to leave loose ends!
Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'm glad everyone is enjoying the wind down of this story! There's quite a bit I've got planned for the next chapter, so it may take me just a bit longer to get it all finished! So, thanks in advance for your patience!
