Hey yall!
I'm thinking of adding chains to my bondage gear but don't really know how I would go about making the best use of them. There are a lot of resources for rope bondage, and cuffs are pretty straight forward, but I haven't found much stuff online about using chains to restrain someone.
People who have used chains, id love to hear what's worked well for you as well as what doesn't work/what to avoid. Is it possible to use chains directly to bind wrists/ankles? Or do they need to be used with cuffs & other devices? Are chain chest harnesses possible in the same way rope harnesses are?

You are only limited by your imagination.
In my experience it's quite difficult to actually secure someone by wrapping chains around the arms and legs. You can't wrap and bend chains as flexibly as rope and securing chains with locks is not as easy as you might think. It's tough to get them tight enough to actually be secure but easy to bruise the person if the chains are too tight.
With my wife, we chosen to use leather cuffs on her wrists and ankles and attach the chains to those. Much easier and no chance of injury.

Never been a huge fan of chains or cuffs; always prefer softer material when it comes to binding or being bound. Though collars being tied to a anchor point has been a recent turn on but for safety reasons I don't participate in that myself.

Did you end up adding any chains to your bondage inventory? If so, what did you get and how do you use them. If you been using them—you probably have some tips of your own to share at this point from several months of experience. If so, please share away!
If you’re still looking for any thoughts or recommendations on the subject, I’ve got a couple to provide. As background, my bondage collection includes a ton of leather gear (e.g., cuffs, collars, belts, gags, hoods), over a dozen pairs of handcuffs and ankle cuffs, as well as tons of chains (in different lengths), locks, and connectors (e.g., carabiners, snap links, hooks).
I love the feel of leather, but I also really love the security of chains and handcuffs—so I previously experimented with binding my wrists and ankles together with just chains and locks. I think I even attempted an all-chain hogtie. Honestly, though, I wasn’t a fan of how this felt (or looked, for what that’s worth). It definitely did the job, however, and I definitely wasn’t going to get out without the keys! Ultimately, for me—if I want to have the strength and security of steel in a session, I’m just going to use handcuffs and ankle cuffs, and use the chain to make any connections when/where necessary.
The one exception to this for me is that I love my Smith & Wesson M1840 transport chain (I have a couple that I’ve cut to different lengths, actually). This chain has a pass-through link in the middle for handcuffs—further limiting a prisoner’s arm movement. Because I just like the feeling of the chain and want to be in some kind of “bondage†during the day, this is more than comfortable to wear for hours on end (even being fairly tight around my waist).
I would certainly provide a bit of caution in that chain link can sometimes pinch the skin (and leave nasty marks!) if two connected links are moved against each other in just the right way. That can certainly hurt, and not in a good way. I’d also state an obvious point as well—there is no give when it comes to chain (as there is with leather or rope), so be very careful with how tight you make the chain before locking it in place.
As for making a harness out of chain—never tried it, but I can imagine with the right length and width of chain, that certainly would be possible—and probably look pretty fantastic as well!
Also, keep in mind that working with chain can be loud. It’s a bit harder to be discreet (if/when you need to be) with all the clinking and jingling of links. And lastly, just make sure you’ve got a good key management system in place and you know where they are at all times!
