Western Drama

I think readers here will like hearing about the summer job I fell into this last summer. When one gets a job these days it's often through friends or relatives, and in this case, my father got me the job through a distant cousin of his. I needed work to pay for college, and Dad thought it would be good for me to get away at the same time.

These people run a ghost town near the interstate highway in the West. The town was a boom town once when there was mining in the area, but then everyone moved away leaving a few buildings that eventually fell down. My relatives bought the place for almost nothing and put some money into rebuilding a main street with a general store, a saloon, hotel, bank, brothel, assay office, horse barn and corale, wagon shop, blacksmith, and a number of houses, and lots of small specialty shops. All in all they created a nice authentic "western" city and tourists drop stop by for lunch, dinner, sometimes to stay in the hotel, and to enjoy the Old West like it was supposed to be. Of course, the town has electric lights and refrigeration and indoor toilets and all the modern comforts, but they are hidden so that the tourists see a vision of the Old West.

I arrived late in May, right after school was out. They weren't open yet, but getting ready, stocking shelves in the stores, setting up the restaurant, and so on. We offered horse rides, hay rides, a chance to watch "real" cowboys break horses, a farm with cattle and other animals, and so on. Altogether it was quite a place. And there was the "drama" which they put on twice a day on the Main Street to entertain the tourists. Usually anywhere from fifty to two hundred people watched us.

The drama centered around an attempted robbery at the bank. There was a lead up with the banker and his daughter, and the hero blacksmith who loved the banker's daughter, and three thieves, and a few other townspeople who came into and out of the bank. My job was to be the teller in the bank. All of this was done on the Main Street with a few props to indicate the door to the bank, the safe, the teller's window, and so on. People watched from the wooden sidewalks along the street. The three thieves rode into town, parked their horses, looked around, put on masks, and went into the bank grabbing me and asking where the banker was. He and his daughter had just left to get lunch. So they took me and tied me up and put me on the ground and waited for the banker and his daughter to return. They come back, and the thieves grab them and threaten the daughter if the banker doesn't open the safe. He agrees finally, and then the sheriff comes in to warn us that there are thieves around. The Sheriff sees the thieves and runs out, getting a posse and holding the thieves in the bank. The posse is led by the Sheriff and the hero blacksmith who manages to sneak into the bank, "get the drop on the thieves", shoots one of them, holds up the rest for the Sheriff, and is the big hero of the day, kissed by the banker's daughter and applauded by all.

The entire drama took about twenty minutes to act out, and I was tied and gagged for about fifteen minutes or so. This happened twice a day, at ten in the morning and at two in the afternoon. And I have to admit, I loved every minute of it. When the drama was over, the players stood around in costume and let the tourists take pictures of them of pictures of them with the tourists and so on.

As the summer progressed, the guys who played the thieves became increasingly creative in the way they tied me up and gagged me. I was hogtied, tied to a chair, bound to a post, and so on. They added lines to their dialogue to fill time as they trussed me up. Hank (actually Ralph who played Hank) asked me after about two weeks if I liked being tied up, and I confessed that it was sort of fun. Then they really went to work on me each time, and got in the habit of leaving me bound and gagged during the picture taking session at the end of the drama. So then I would be tied up twice a day for up to thirty five or forty minutes. We had one of those picture taking places where people dress up in old clothes and make a pose that looks like the old west, and have their picture taken. One man and his wife actually wanted their picture taken with me, guns on me with me bound and gagged. We did it, and so I was tied up for well over an hour until it was done. My boss actually thought of adding the prospect of binding and gagging one of the patrons, and another as the Sheriff, as one of the possibilities for an "old" picture, but finally decided not to.

A couple of times, as a joke, the cast refused to untie me, and carried me into one of the "staff only" rooms and left me there for a couple of hours. I never complained, so they concluded that I liked it, and it got to be a joke to keep me bound up and gagged. On the last day of the summer, we scheduled only one drama - the one at ten in the morning. The thieves took special care to tie me up to a chair, using lots of rope. I noticed that they bound me much more than usual, and that the gag was really effective. When the drama was over, they carried me, chair and all into the back room, and they left me there the rest of the day. I sat in the chair that evening all through the big final party that the boss threw for all of the workers at the town. They saluted me as the only player who had never complained about his job. The others, I gather, had quickly demanded that the role of teller be spread around among the cast. I did it through the entire summer, which had never happened before. They finally untied me when the party ended, although they had threatened to leave me much longer. Everyone got a big kick out of that. I had earned enough to almost pay my full year at college and books, so I was happy.

Well, I'm scheduled to return next summer and I'm really looking forward to it. Hank has promised to think up new ways to bind and gag me. It should be fun.
