13 - The Gina-Steffi Wars: Armistice

The evening of Gina's revenge on Steffi I walked over to see Steffi. I was concerned that she was not quite a calm as she pretended to be after her punishment by mudbath. Steffi was reading a book on the front porch -a book on the Civil War, a topic which already fascinated me. The book was in fact a Birthday present from me. She greeted me and we talked about nothing in particular for a few minutes, then out of the blue Steffi said "When you see Gina, please tell her I consider us to be even".
Steffi had asked for a truce in the war. She would not seek retaliation for the mud bath. But I guess she felt a little shy about telling Gina that in person. Early the next afternoon I went over to Gina's in my attempt to be a shuttled diplomat.
To say Gina was skeptical of Steffi's statement was a understatement.
"How do I now she's not just setting me up? But you can tell her I won't make the next attack". Gina obviously distrusted Steffi and had trouble believing that she would not seek revenge of the Mud Attack. But at least Gina would not attack without provocation.
The problem was Gina might have a pretty damn wide definition of provocation had nightmares of a film my Mother had taken me to see a couple of years ago called the Duelists, an excellent Ridley Scott film about two officers in Napoleon's army who engage over the years in one duel after another over minor points of honor.
I told Steffi about the results of my talk with Gina. Steffi just said "I Guess I will have to show Gina I am sincere". When I asked how Steffi just said "Oh, something will happen". And something did.
It happened about a week later when Steffi and I were on the same side in our maneuvers and Gina was on the other side. Gina and Chris, my kid sister walked into an ambush. We let them have it with our super soakers. Chris was soaked but Gina got only a little water on her. Chris fell down but when Gina tried the same Steffi stepped out and said "She is only a little wet; She is our Prisoner!".
Gina looked more than a little concerned on this turn of events but she knew if she walked away now she would be branded as having wimped out, something unthinkable to her. Knowing the procedure, Gina just turned and put her hands behind her.
I took a piece of cord and begun tying her wrists myself to avoid what had started the whole thing when Steffi had tied Gina hands just a little too tight. Steffi just watched and when I was done tested the cords to see if they were secure. They were; I took pride in my skill with knots and my ability to tie tight enough to hold but not tight enough to hurt.
Steffi took a scarf with a knot tied in it and used it to gag Gina. Steffi asked Gina if the gag was too tight. Gina did make the usual noise of assent or head toss of dissent; She was not going to give her captor any satisfaction. Gina later said she thought Steffi had something really special planned for her revenge.
Everyone knew that Steffi had control of the prisoner. Steffi said "Take her to where she took me". So we marched off to the same clearing where Gina had given Steffi her mud treatment. I begun to get uneasy. Could Steffi have changed her mind and decided a little vengeance was in order?
When we reached the clearing, Gina gave a nervous glance toward the pool. It had gone down even more but there was still lots of gooey mud. Steffi guided Gina toward a tree, sat her down, and tied her ankles together. She tied them as she usually tied a prisoner, firmly but not cruelly-the same as she had tied me on a couple of occasions when we on opposite sides (It was fun to be "enemies" on occasion). Steffi then took a 20 foot length of rope. (We carried the stuff in backpacks), made a loop around Gina's left elbow, pulled the rope around the tree, made a loop around her right elbow, pulled it in front to Gina's left elbow made another loop, and continued until the rope was almost used up. Steffi then made a final cinch and tied a knot behind the tree where Gina could not reach it.
Gina was now firmly tied to the tree. I checked the ropes-not to see if they were too loose-but to see if they were too tight. Steffi has tied Gina the same she would any other person in our games. Chris, now out of the game was left to guard Gina--Under the rules she could not untie Gina except for safety reasons. We then left and continued the battle.
My side won, and we walked back to the clearing. Gina was still tied to the tree and gagged. She had been bound and gagged about an half hour. She begun to squirm when she saw Steffi returning, wondering what was coming. Steffi walked toward Gina, and then what happened was that nothing happened. Steffi said "The Game is over", untied Gina's gag and proceeded to untie her. Gina looked very surprised. She was fully expecting Steffi to give her a mud treatment at the least. Instead Steffi was following the usual procedure of untying a prisoner when the game was over. Now Gina had her proof that Steffi wanted an end to hostilities. Gina got up and didn't say anything. She just walked away with the rest of us.
That was the end of the Gina-Steffi's wars. Steffi came to understand that Gina was no threat to her relationship with me, and Gina came to realize that Steffi was not a snob, just reserved. It took a while, but they did become friends. Which made it a lot more comfortable for me. One major factor in the peace was that neither was really a vicious person at heart. Gina's tough street kid bark was much worse than her bite.
We were to be kind of trio in High School--expanded to a quartet when Gina had a boyfriend. In our Senior year, about three years after this, we had what may be the most bizarre experience of my Teenage years--the Halloween party from Hell! It will be up for Halloween and it will be a long one.
