chapter 1
If there's only one day of the year to kidnap, tie up, and gag a man, it's Halloween!
It was Halloween night, and the streets of the city were filled with children in colorful costumes, collecting candy and heading to parties.
Majid was sitting on the couch, waiting for his son to finish putting on his Halloween costume so he could drive him to the party being held at school, then return home to get some rest.

Majid
Since his wife had passed away five years ago, Majid had done his best to raise his son in the best way possible. He was a tall, muscular, and handsome man, and many women wanted to be with him — but Majid had never thought about starting a new relationship. He preferred to raise his son alone.
Majid got up from the couch and walked toward his son’s room, calling out:
— Nikan, my son, are you ready? You’ll be late for your school party!
When Majid entered the room, he hadn’t expected his son to choose such a costume for Halloween.
His 12-year-old son was wearing black shorts, a black T-shirt, and white sneakers. He had tied ropes around his wrists and wrapped several layers of silver duct tape over his mouth. Beneath the tape, he had stuffed a pair of his father’s socks into his mouth, making it impossible for him to speak. His legs, however, were left untied so he could walk and dance at the party.
Majid burst out laughing when he saw him and said,
— Oh, so you’re a kidnapped boy for Halloween! Are you sure you want to wear that?
Nikan nodded his head to say yes.
Majid smiled and said,
— Good choice! Alright then, let’s get in the car so you won’t be late for the party.
Fifteen minutes later, Majid parked his old red pickup truck in the school’s parking lot. He turned to his son and said,
— I hope you have fun at the party, but don’t forget — don’t eat too much candy. Though, I guess with your mouth gagged like that, you probably can’t eat any anyway.
Nikan smiled under the layers of duct tape and mumbled a few unintelligible sounds to say goodbye:
— Mmmmmppphhh mppphhhh!
Then he got out of the car and walked toward the group of kids dressed as Disney princesses and Captain America, all heading into the school hall.
Majid started the truck to head back home, but a strange noise came from the engine — and the old pickup refused to start.
He hit the steering wheel in frustration and muttered,
— No, not now, you stupid truck!
Getting out, he lifted the hood to check what was wrong. The old red pickup had seen better days — all of Majid’s friends had told him it was time to sell it and buy a newer car. But Majid loved that truck and had never even considered selling it. Maybe now, though, it really was time.
He peered into the engine, trying to figure out the problem, but nothing made sense. The school parking lot was almost empty — all the kids had gone inside, and the music from the party was so loud it echoed even out here. The lot was dark, and Majid stood there alone, leaning against the truck, unsure what to do next.
Suddenly, he heard footsteps behind the trees.
It was dark, with only a faint light, so he couldn’t see who it was. Majid called out loudly:
— Hey? Hello? Is someone there?
Out of the shadows stepped a muscular man in a black T-shirt, wearing a terrifying mask. He began walking toward Majid.

Majid, startled, said,
— Who are you? Why don’t you answer me?
He’d seen enough horror and crime movies to know he should run — but he was too shocked to move. His legs wouldn’t obey him.
Before he could react, the masked man clamped a hand over Majid’s mouth and whispered,
— Happy Halloween!
Majid tried to scream, but the man pressed harder, gripping Majid’s arms with his other hand and shoving him toward a black car.
— Mmmmmppphhhhhhh mmmmmppphhhhhh!
Happy Halloween!
