Part 1: Mindset
The next two weeks were very difficult for Maddy given her lack of wrist movement, and the other rules that came with allowing them to heal. Although she had no trouble putting her tights and belt on, Beth had to help her zip her dress up each day. Her efficiency in doing her chores had dropped by a noticeable amount, but The Harns knew it couldn't be helped, and it wasn't like she injured herself willingly.
Every day she periodically had to stop what she was doing, and take breaks to put ice on the wounds, and then some heat pads. After this, she'd have to have her wrists wrapped up again. On top of all of this, she had to take her medication every six hours. This had an effect on her sleep, as she always had to wake up at midnight to take one of them. Thankfully there was only a week's worth of pills.
So began a new day in the middle of week two with everyone doing their usual routine. Maddy showered herself, and got herself dressed in her standard uniform of her dress, tights, and belt, and put her hair half up as usual. She had to use a claw clip for her hair, as it didn't require too much wrist movement. She also needed Beth's help to zip her dress up.
Other than the fact that her chores took almost twice as long, nothing was different about her day. Wiping the kitchen counters didn't take as long since she didn't have to move her wrists at all for that one, but loading the dishes was a bit tougher. With each task she performed, she kept having to remind herself not to move her wrists too much.
Once she saw that she had the kitchen all to herself, she decided to have the broom sweep the floor for her while she wiped the cupboards and drawers. Once she was done, she headed back to the study to begin dusting it, as she hadn't been able to for about a week. The fact that she was falling behind her normal routine was beginning to bother her, but she knew that everyone was aware of the circumstances.
Once the study was done, she looked it over briefly, and then left. It was soon time for her to begin applying the ice again, so she headed back to the kitchen. On the way, she saw Tony leaving the house.
“Oh, Maddy, don't worry about my room today,†He said, as he saw her approaching.
“Very well,†She responded. He nodded, and then headed out the door.
Maddy entered the kitchen, and pulled out an ice pack from the freezer. She then sat down at the island. Once seated, She carefully unwrapped her wrist. There was only a little bit of pink on it, and it looked as though it was almost over. This might be the last time she has to do this. Once free of the wrapping, she wiggled her wrist a bit. She then started closing and opening her fingers. She felt no pain or discomfort at all now. She then did the same thing with her other wrist. It also felt normal now, but she still wasn't going to tempt fate. She applied the ice pack to her first wrist with a cloth in between. The kitchen door then opened to reveal Mrs. Harn.
“Hopefully you won't have to do this for much longer,†Mrs. Harn stated.
“I think this should be the last time, but better to not tempt fate,†Maddy explained.
“Good idea,†Mrs. Harn agreed. “You know, I just noticed that your birthday is only a couple days away,†She then said, with a smile, as if to congratulate her. Maddy, rather surprisingly, gave her a depressed look.
“Can't wait,†Maddy said, in a melancholy tone. Mrs. Harn's smile dropped like a rock.
“Maddy, I said it was your birthday, not that your dog died,†She insisted, now very curious as to what would cause Maddy to feel this way about what should be a special day for her.
“Unfortunately, I always have to remember my Birthday as the day it happened,†Maddy explained, putting heavy emphasis on the "It". Mrs. Harn thought for a moment as she quickly put the pieces together. Maddy's Tenth Birthday was the day in which her parents left her behind.
“Oh, I see,†She said, in an understanding tone. “Is there anything I can do to make you feel better about it? She then asked. Maddy just sighed.
“I'm sorry. I know you mean well, and this is a day I should be happy about,†Maddy told her.
“You know, sometimes happiness is a choice,†Mrs. Harn said, as Maddy was switching the ice pack to her other wrist. She then gave The Mistress her attention again.
“Meaning?â€
“Don't dwell on the negative, and find something else positive to hold on to instead,†Mrs. Harn explained. Maddy nodded.
“I think I understand,†She said, and They both shared a smile. “I just don't know what to do,†Maddy then said.
“Maybe a new hobby? Or perhaps a party?†Mrs. Harn suggested.
“I was never much of a party goer,†Maddy responded.
“You and Tony could go on a date,†Mrs. Harn then threw out. Maddy snorted. She knew the likelihood of that was slim, but the idea was amusing. “I'm surprised Tony hasn't asked you on a date yet,†Mrs. Harn then stated.
“What makes you say that?†Maddy asked her.
“I mean, you check all of his boxes,†Mrs. Harn answered. “You're roughly his age, you're pretty,†She started, “And you're British,†She then added, which got a chuckle out of Maddy.
“Thank you,†Maddy said. “But I don't have wealth like all of his or Beth's friends,†She then said.
“Oh, trust me, that doesn't concern Tony in the slightest,†Mrs. Harn stated, in a reassuring tone. “Tony's had a lot of girls approach him, and so far he's turned down all but one before the first date even happened,†She explained. “All of them had wealth too except that one,†She then added.
“Who's the one?†Maddy asked. Mrs. Harn paused for a moment.
“That's a touchy story I shouldn't get into right now,†She answered. “But the point is that Tony usually prefers girls who aren't looking to elevate their status by going out with him,†She then explained. Maddy smiled and nodded, but then remembered something else.
“Even still, I think it's a bit awkward for me to go out with him when i'm employed by his father,†She pointed out.
“Maddy, sometimes you spill the strangest things,†A new voice said. The two women turned to the kitchen entrance to see Mr. Harn walk in.
“I beg your pardon, sir?†She asked.
“Everyone decent member of society works for someone,†He said, as he walked to the fridge, and opened it. He then turned to face Maddy again. “I work for every person in the state who wants to keep their grocery stores stocked, and their cars fueled. And you work for me...not much difference,†He then explained, and then got himself out a can of Root Beer. Maddy smiled at him.
“Thank you, Sir,†She said. He just raised his Root Beer can to her in response. Maddy realized that her wrists were done with the ice, and removed the pack as Beth entered the kitchen.
“Oh, there you are,†She said, looking at her mother.
“I'll be there in a moment,†Mrs. Harn said to her daughter. Beth nodded, and left.
“Maddy, don't let your background or profession stop you from seeing people,†Mr. Harn insisted. “At the end of the day, we're all humans,†He then added.
Meanwhile...at the Bowling Alley...
“Honestly, Tony, with the way you describe her, I'm surprised you haven't asked her out yet,†A Blonde-Haired Boy asked, just before tossing his ball down the lane.
“She literally checks everything on your preferences,†An Elderly Gentleman added. Tony's Bowling Team apparently had no age gaps.
“Trust me, I want to,†Tony insisted, as he stood up to take his turn. “I just don't know if it's right to ask out a girl who's employed by my Father,†He then explained.
“Tony, how many people do you work for on a daily basis?†The Old Man asked him. Tony shrugged.
“Maybe a couple dozen,†Tony answered. The Conversation was put on pause so Tony could concentrate on his shot for the time being. He left three pins standing with a rough split.
“You work for someone, and so does she. There's not much difference,†The Older Man stated. Tony nodded a bit.
“I guess you have a point there,†Tony said, as he picked up his Spare Ball.
“I didn't choose how I met my wife, but I did choose to love her when I developed feelings after meeting her,†The Gentleman pointed out. Tony looked at him.
"I'm not fully in love with her," He insisted.
"Right, but the point is that you should feel no shame in asking her out," The Gentleman stated. Tony grinned at him.
“Yeah, I guess I'll ask her out on a date,†Tony said. “I just don't know when yet,†He then added, and picked up his ball.
“If you make this, I'll buy you a Root Beer,†The Blonde then said. Tony just shrugged, and lined up his shot.
