Highly important!
I think the captive needs to be gagged through every stage. It can start with a hand over the mouth, maybe with something stuffed in when they're still caught off guard. They need to be gagged as soon as possible and have their mouth shut at all times they aren't using it to eat, drink or please their captor.
I love when the gag is paired with a handgag on top, it shows how submissive and helpless the captive it is.I love useless but humilating gags like ring ones, that just make the captive drool and present their mouth for use.

Gags are essential!
I usually get gagged early on as I make too much noise or whine too much for my captor

If I do a kidnap scenario a gag is a must.
I love it most when it starts with a handgag and eventually turns into tying the captive up and finding other ways to gag them.

A gag has to be used in a kidnapping scenario. For me, it's just not as exciting if I'm left ungagged. If you're going to kidnap me, gag me so I can't call out for help plus it will put me in a more submissive mindset.

@LayersOfLau I actually prefer all that noisy protesting, whining and pleading to come after the gag comes on

Nothing better than listening to all that muffled moaning and mmmpphhing

Very tight gagging is a must.

100% important. Even if for practical reason there is no need to put on a gag - like an abandoned spot - having a gag would really put me in a more helpless position.
If thinking from the captor point of view, I'd say my preferred method is for the captor to seize the victim and handgag them, before telling them to be quiet or they will pay! The captor then can begin to tie the hands of the victim first, and later gag the victim when they see fit. Bonus point if the captor leave the gagging until after done with most of the tying - just when the victim think they are spared (of course if the victim is more feisty, they might want to gag immediately after they're done tying the hands!)

Of course a gag is important. I haven’t tried to be kidnapped, but have been tied up against my will many years ago. After the guys had tied my hands, I was gagged. And after that they tied me to a chair. I’didnt shout or fight against them, but I guess they were feeling more secure with me gagged.

If I'm being kidnapped, then it's pretty vital, I would think.
I wouldn't want to be able to alert anybody before my being taken away. And once secured, and a proper damsel, being gagged is still a necessity.

Gags are essential if you're going to do any kind of kidnap scenarios.

Every robber should have duct tape and cloth on them just in case they need to use duct tape or make a cleave gag. Other, more experienced robbers will make sure they have ballgags or muzzle gags in their kit. Especially if they specialize in stealing the "finest merchandise" to... auction off

A gag is vital for bondage. I love many different gags:ball, tape, cleve, sock. But the best gag ov all is a woman’s foot in my mouth.

Maybe I'm a bit of an outlier here since I think gags can be fun but they're not essential. I'd be happy to be a good girl and have a friendly chat with my captor.
What you really don't want, though, is that your victim sees where you take them or where you keep them at any time during the kidnapping.
Are you listening, kidnappers?

In a kidnap scenario- would you bound them first or gag them?
How important is the gag to you if you were kidnapping or being kidnapped?
Quoting this only because the original post was a year ago, it seems. But it seems, too, that people are coming back to it.
So.
For me if the scenario is a kidnap I'm siding with the majority of posters to say yes, a gag is essential.
Kidnapping implies without- imagined, because we're just playing here not doing anything naughty, and so of course there's -consent, and therefore you need to keep them quiet, because otherwise you'll be caught in the act.
And so a gag is necessary I feel.
Plus it's fun, all part of the helplessness of bondage, that you can't talk AND can't freely move adds extra levels to the experience.
As for when to gag? I'd say bind the wrists first for a partial capture, and then gag. Bound wrists, if done behind, means the victim can't remove the gag. And yes they'll struggle, moan, but at least they can't shout for help.

A gag is definitely necessary, but what the gag is and needs to achieve can change over the course of the scene.
As others have already said, the most important first step is to get the wrists tied behind their back. Depending on the setup, something fast might be preferred. Cuffs, zip ties, tape, etc.
The initial gag's job is to overpower and to silence. Something that will be quick to apply, but thorough in gagging. I like a nice tight tape wrap, since it can also be used for bindings. Won't come off easily, can be applied relatively easily, same material as for binding.
Now, if you're close to who you're taking, maybe there's a chance for a 'step zero' gag. For example, if your target is willing to come over for a movie night, perhaps you play up how strictly important it is there absolute silence for the movie. After a transgression or two, you break out the tape and apply a few pieces over their mouths. In my experience, this has been received pretty well, and not a bad litmus test for kink in general.
Once you've caught your target, I'd say change out the gag to a thick ballgag. Less about silencing, and more about coming to terms with accepting the bondage. At least when I'm bound, the point when I'm drooling around a gag is when I have to admit defeat. I struggle less, and can only focus on not drooling on myself too much.

How else will you shut them up? Gags are always a must to keep someone from drawing attention to themselves in their bondage and crying for help. Duct tape usually takes care of it!
As a captive, I would want to be gagged. If you are going to tie me up and hold me hostage somewhere, at least make sure I stay quiet. Besides, it's for my own good!
