It has to be the material used in the rope, or something put on the rope, that you're allergic to. You can try rope from a different material once your skin issues clear up to see if that was the issue.

I figure most people like me aren't big fans of hands tied in front. The idea for a fundraiser for students to donate money for some duct tape had been a great success. Apparently lots of us wanted to see the cute Spanish and history teachers duct taped to poles.

Duct tape has to be it for me. It's something that's actually used for mundane purposes fairly often and the sound still triggers thoughts of using it to bind or gag someone.

I'm guessing she meant she couldn't speak out of shock? I sort of see the reasoning, but I've never heard it used that way before. I might consider it a slang term used in this way.
